Are you ready to launch your efforts for improving teaching and learning for English learners and diverse learners?
Every summer, Leading with Learning holds multi-day intensive summer institutes for teachers and leaders to learn how to implement integrated science, mathematics, literacy, and English language development (ELD). The institutes will focus on Building Equity for English Learners in the Content Areas and Supporting English Learners in Mathematics.
Building Equity for English Learners in the Content Areas
In this three-day institute, teachers and leaders learn how to implement integrated science, literacy, and English language development. Professional learning for teachers is differentiated into four grade spans: TK–1, 2–3, 4–6, and 6–12. An additional fourth day of learning offers two learning tracks: a focus on leadership or applying your learning in Spanish dual immersion settings. Leaders will focus on site and district-level implementation, addressing topics such as professional learning, program components, and implementing and sustaining effective instructional practices. Dual immersion teachers will learn how to approach language analysis and writing in Spanish, building upon the foundational learning from the previous three days. Teachers in the dual immersion sessions will be divided into two grade span groups, TK–3 and 4–8.
Supporting English Learners in Mathematics
This three-day intensive summer institute focuses on deepening understanding of the components of high-quality instruction that integrates mathematic standards so that all students can successfully develop conceptual knowledge and the English language proficiency, simultaneously. This will help participants to ensure that all students develop academic literacy, analytical practices, and deep content understanding in mathematics. Professional learning is differentiated into three grade spans: TK–2, 3–5, and 6–12. School and district teams are highly encouraged to participate together in the three-day institute for optimal learning and implementation.
Early Language and Literacy Learning Summer Institutes – Grades TK-1
In this five-day intensive summer institute, primary grades (TK-1), teachers learn how to support young children's Early Language and Literacy Development, with a particular focus on young English learners. The institute expands teachers’ abilities to successfully enact California’s ELA Standards,ELD Standards, and ELA/ELD Framework. Teachers will learn how to implement a well-rounded early language and literacy approach that ensures young children develop both foundational reading skills and early academic language and literacy, both of which are essential for a strong start in school.
The institutes will focus on strengthening teaching and learning in four major areas:
• Fostering collaborative academic conversations among students, abundant writing, and interactive reading around complex texts and intellectually rich content
• Engaging students in text-oriented talk about the language in complex texts
• Observing students closely to provide both planned and just-in-time scaffolding
• Creating positive and culturally responsive learning environments
Who should attend?

• Instructional coaches and principals
• District and county office leaders
